Come and See

Preacher:
Passage: John 1:35-51
Service Type:

Introduction

  • The calling of the disciples
  • Dealt with in all gospels but different in John to Matthew, Mark and Luke
  • Matthew, mark and Luke's gospel emphasises the immediacy of the call
  • John's Gospel emphasises the relationship that Jesus had with this men
  • John's purpose in writing is that we might believe and have life in His name
  • "Come and see"
    • A second hand faith is not good enough on the Day of Judgment
    • You must have a first hand knowledge - you must come and see for yourself
    • Job - "whom I will see and not another"

Drawn by Jesus

  • Jesus' foreknowledge is seen (v47-48)
    • Jesus sees you wherever you are
  • Jesus knows what is in the heart of men
    • Jesus can see into your heart (but man cannot)
    • [Jesus knew what was in the heart of Nathanael - no deceit]
      • Jesus knows if your heart is deceitful and at odds with Him
    • "But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man." - John 2:24-25
    • "O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, You know it altogether." - Psalm 139:1-4
    • Jesus' knowledge of the Samaritan woman's life - John 4:27-29
  • Jesus draws people to Himself by His love
    • Many will also be drawn through compulsion - at the Judgment
    • Every knee will bow to Jesus
  • Jesus offers heaven
  • John 12:32
  • Example of Jacob's ladder
  • Jesus draws in tenderness - John 1:38-39
    • "What do you seek?"
    • The two disciples did not know, so they asked another question
    • They needed to spend more time with Jesus
    • Isa 1:18 - "come let us reason together"
    • 'Let me teach you what you are seeking'

Drawn to Jesus

  • The identity of this Jesus who is drawing men
    • His invitation and person
  • Philip: a man of Nazareth, son of Joseph, of whom the prophets spoke (v45)
  • Nathanael: "you are the Son of God, the King of Israel!" (v49)
  • Jesus is accessible even though He is the King and Messiah
    • "Come and see"
    • You know where you can find this Jesus - don't make excuses
  • "Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." - Matthew 11:28-30
  • Have you seen the real Jesus?
    • Not relying on a distorted view from what others have said
    • "Come and see"
    • We do not preach ourselves (or anything else) but we preach only Christ the Lord
  • Why do you not come?
    • Are there issues you have read or heard of?
  • God know what you are like
    • He says tenderly and earnestly "Come and see"
    • He says I can open heaven for you - without this there is only judgment and hell

Drawn for Jesus

  • Andrew brought Simon to Jesus (v41)
    • Andrew is invariably bringing someone to Jesus
    • How greatly used is the word of Personal Testimony
  • Simon to be called Cephas, the rock
    • What an irony considering Simon's character
    • Is there anyone less rock like than Peter?
    • Jesus gives Peter a new name
    • Matt 16:13-19
    • What a transformation in this man
  • Jesus draws you to Him to make you a new creation
    • A new heart
    • A new awareness of sin
    • A new set of values
    • A new love for the brethren and God
  • Which of us is without flaws?
    • Yet Jesus draws and uses people like us
    • Example of Jacob (Gen 32:28)
  • We need to come wherever the word of God is preached
    • Taste and see that the Lord is good
    • "Come and see"
    • We must come seeking the real thing
    • Nathanael was skeptical (v46)
    • "Come and see"
