Jesus is Lord over Sickness

Preacher:
Series:
Passage: Mark 5:25-34
Service Type:

Who are today's social outcasts?

  • Examples:
    • Heavy drug or alcohol use
    • Prostitutes
    • People with severe mental health problems
  • Jesus met such people (e.g. prostitutes, sinners, tax collectors, blind Bartemieus)
  • Jesus had time for a lonely and troubled woman
  • Jesus had time for someone who was an 'unclean' social outcast
  • The church is a place for sinners, a place of spiritual healing for sinners

Pitiful Condition

  • v25-26
  • Ongoing for 12 years but not necessarily continuous (might have been intermittent)
  • Was severe (described as a "fountain" in v29)
  • Was difficult for her to cope with
  • Meant she was ceremonially unclean (Leviticus 15:19, 25)
    • She could not touch other people
    • She wouldn't even be able to hug or kiss her relatives
    • Socially stigmatised and isolated
  • Maybe there was resentment in her heart towards religion
  • Had tried many doctors but things had gotten worse not better
    • Maybe some doctors gained financially
    • Maybe some treatments made her worse
    • Maybe she lost all sense of dignity
  • Luke 8:43 - in Luke's eyes (as a doctor) she had an incurable condition
  • Physical healing is a picture of spiritual healing
    • We are polluted and unclean before God
    • Sin separates us from God
  • This lady came to Jesus and He had time for her and healed her
    • People might be searching in different directions but need to come to Jesus

Perfect Cure

  • She had heard about Jesus (v27)
    • His fame had gone out (cf Mark 1:45, 3:9,20)
  • She came nervously and in secret
  • She had certain faith that Jesus would heal her (v28)
    • The moment she touches Jesus' garment she is healed
  • The moment of salvation is immeadiate and instantaneous
    • You are brought from darkness into light
  • If you are a sinner, come to Christ
    • Do not worry about your fears
    • People may not accept you but Christ will accept you
  • Perfect Cure
    • A complete cure, outright, no further intervention required

Public Confession

  • Jesus knew power had gone out of Him and looked around for the woman
    • He wanted to draw out her faith publicly
    • The disciples didn't realise this and pointed outed out that everyone was crushing Jesus (the word 'crush' is the same meaning as in to 'crush a grape')
  • The woman was trembling
  • The bible says we must 'believe in our heart and confess with our mouths' (Romans 10:9)
    • Have you publicly confessed?
    • Have you been publicly baptised?
    • You owe it yourself but ultimately you owe it to God
    • The woman knew in herself she was healed - she praised God

Precious Confirmation

  • "Daughter your faith has made you well" (v34)
    • A precious word of confirmation and encouragement
  • Jesus accepts weak and trembling faith
    • He acknowledges this faith and does not ridicule it
    • He says "go in peace" (v34)
  • It wasn't the woman's touch that made her well but her faith healed her
