God’s Way of Escape

Preacher:
Passage: Romans 3:9-26
Service Type:
  • Many Jews think their Jewishness will make them justified before God
    • Paul debunks this viewpoint
    • Surely this would have been like a red rag to a bull
  • The advantages of being a Jew is many
    • You are privileged - but it is what you do with it
    • Many today think that their privileges will stand them in good sted at the judgment
    • They mean nothing before a Holy God
    • They do not bring us salvation
  • Paul boldy and bluntly brings this dilemma to the people
    • v9-10 - all people are under sin
    • Whether we feel or acknowledge this guilt does not remove it
    • Paul speaks to the Jews from their psalms to make this point
  • We are guilty ...
    • In our understanding (v11)
    • In our direction (v12)
    • In our speech (v13)
    • In our actions (v15)
    • In our arrogance (v18)
  • Man's refusal to acknowledge God has led to the charges laid out here
    • These are strong words
      • Are they too strong?
    • By human standards - even the best of men fail God's standards
    • "Some of us are not guilty of all but all of us are guilty of some
    • We must judge ourselves by God's standards (not human standards)
    • God is God - He sets the standards (v20)
    • We apply His standards to our hearts
  • What an indictment!
    • Gen 6:5
    • As we read these things we realise that our sin has trapped us and we have no way of escape ...
    • ... unless we look to the way of escape that God has brought
  • God's righteousness through faith (v23)
    • Example
    • God has provided a means of escape
    • This way of escape is available to all people
    • v21 - the way of righteousness is apart from the law
    • Relying solely on the work of Jesus on Calvary - not upon the law
    • "To all and on all who believe" (v22)
    • All we have to do is reach out in faith and accept God's way of escape
    • We are all in the place of danger (v23) but the gift of faith is free (v24)
    • The Lord Jesus Christ has taken away the wrath of God by taking it upon Himself (v25)
  • Have you reached out to receive the gift of faith?
  • Closing remarks
    • "The things of the world grow dim in the light of His glory and grace"
    • Pride
    • Fear
    • Is their anything stopping you from reaching out to Jesus Christ?
    • Receive the life that God is willing to give
