Introduction
- Looking at who is Jesus
- In Biblical times - there was much ignorance about who Jesus' was
- In today's world - there is much biblical ignorance
- It is our role to preach the gospel
- v41-48 - Biblically ignorant people
- v42 - if only you had known
- The people often did not know
- The teachers of Israel did not know
- Jesus had to show them the Old Testament Scriptures testified of Him
- The people are blind to who He is
- Two attributes of Jesus
- Deep compassion
- v45 - Zeal
- The people are so ignorant they are trampling on the Temple of God
- Asking the question - who is Jesus?
- Especially after His Triumphal Entry
- Overview:
- The Compassionate Son of God
- The Zealous High Priest of God
The Compassionate Son of God
- Jesus wept on three occasions:
- At the death of Lazarus
- In the garden of Gethsemane - Heb 5:7
- Looking over Jerusalem (v41)
- Weeping
- A different Greek word to that used at the death of Lazarus
- He was sobbing
- When He came into Jerusalem the people were praising Him
- Yet, as He leaves Jerusalem for Bethany and then returns - He weeps
- Because Jesus sees the true heart of the people in the city
- This shows His humanity
- He was perfect in every way - examples
- He was undefiled in every way
- This shows His divine compassion
- How He loved sinners
- He wept for those who rejected Him
- Luke 23:28
- He thought of others at the cross
- He is the selfless compassionate Son of God
- Jesus wept over His love for sinners - explanation
- Example of Zacchaeus
- He loved them so much He went to the cross for them
- Luke 13:34-35
- Could you ever doubt the love of Jesus?
- Come under the shelter of His wing
- v42/44 - it was the time of Jesus' visitation / God had visited His people
- Luke 1:78
- Yet they would not have Him
- If they had know, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory
- Application:
- Have you seen who Jesus is?
- Have you trusted in Him?
- See how Jesus loved sinners
- v43-44 – Jesus wept over their coming destruction
- Jesus prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem in AD70 (by Titan)
- Explanation
- This grieved Him
- This would be a time for the wrath of God - for rejecting and crucifying the Lord Jesus Christ
- Yet Jesus wept in love
- God holds out arms of love even in the face of righteous judgment
The Zealous High Priest of God (v45-48)
- Caiaphas was the High Priest at the time
- He was corrupt and heartless
- The priests were corrupt - defrauding the people
- He has righteous anger and turned over the tables of the money changers
- Jesus meek and mild
- Jesus with a burning zeal for God
- He is a zealous High Priest
- There is hope - there is a remnant who will always believe
- The people see the righteousness of God
- Mal 1:6
- Do we respect and honour God?
- Do we reverence and please God?
- Do we worship God as He requires?
- Do we pray for others?
- Do we long that God's name would be honoured?
