Preacher:
Series:
Passage: Luke 19:41-48
Service Type:

Introduction

Looking at who is Jesus

In Biblical times – there was much ignorance about who Jesus’ was
In today’s world – there is much biblical ignorance

Examples

It is our role to preach the gospel

v41-48 – Biblically ignorant people

v42 – if only you had known
The people often did not know
The teachers of Israel did not know
Jesus had to show them the Old Testament Scriptures testified of Him
The people are blind to who He is

Two attributes of Jesus

Deep compassion
v45 – Zeal

The people are so ignorant they are trampling on the Temple of God

Asking the question – who is Jesus?

Especially after His Triumphal Entry

Overview:

The Compassionate Son of God
The Zealous High Priest of God

The Compassionate Son of God

Jesus wept on three occasions:

At the death of Lazarus
In the garden of Gethsemane – Heb 5:7
Looking over Jerusalem (v41)

Weeping

A different Greek word to that used at the death of Lazarus
He was sobbing

When He came into Jerusalem the people were praising Him
Yet, as He leaves Jerusalem for Bethany and then returns – He weeps
Because Jesus sees the true heart of the people in the city

This shows His humanity

He was perfect in every way – examples
He was undefiled in every way

This shows His divine compassion

How He loved sinners
He wept for those who rejected Him
Luke 23:28
He thought of others at the cross
He is the selfless compassionate Son of God

Jesus wept over His love for sinners – explanation

Example of Zacchaeus
He loved them so much He went to the cross for them
Luke 13:34-35
Could you ever doubt the love of Jesus?
Come under the shelter of His wing

v42/44 – it was the time of Jesus’ visitation / God had visited His people

Luke 1:78
Yet they would not have Him
If they had know, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory

Application:

Have you seen who Jesus is?
Have you trusted in Him?
See how Jesus loved sinners

v43-44 – Jesus wept over their coming destruction

Jesus prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem in AD70 (by Titan)
Explanation
This grieved Him
This would be a time for the wrath of God – for rejecting and crucifying the Lord Jesus Christ
Yet Jesus wept in love
God holds out arms of love even in the face of righteous judgment

The Zealous High Priest of God (v45-48)

Caiaphas was the High Priest at the time

He was corrupt and heartless
The priests were corrupt – defrauding the people

He has righteous anger and turned over the tables of the money changers

Jesus meek and mild
Jesus with a burning zeal for God
He is a zealous High Priest

There is hope – there is a remnant who will always believe

The people see the righteousness of God

Mal 1:6

Do we respect and honour God?
Do we reverence and please God?
Do we worship God as He requires?
Do we pray for others?
Do we long that God’s name would be honoured?

Closing Remarks
