Bible Text: Luke 10:38-42, Psalm 19:7-14 | Preacher: Andrew Love | Series: Luke’s Gospel | Introduction

Looking at the Ten Commandments
Taking a slight detour
Looking at the underlying principles

Loving God
Loving your neighbour

Looking at Mary and Martha

The Devotion of Mary to Jesus Christ – love for God
Next week considering the Good Samaritan – love for neighbour

Love for God is more than activity

More than service, ministry and activity
Martha had invited people to her home

She was very busy and stressed but Mary was not helping
Martha speaks to Jesus without speaking to Mary

Martha has the audacity to tell Jesus what to do – “tell her to help me” (v40)

Are we ever like this – in prayer?

Martha doubts that Jesus cares – “do you not care” (v40)

Do we ever feel like this?
Do not take your eyes of Jesus
Do not do things in the flesh – personal example

Jesus tells Martha to stop and listen to Him
To love God

Deut 6:6-7 – a call to worship
Ps 95:6
Be like Mary and listen intently to the word of God

Love for God is supremely about listening to His word and enjoying His presence

We have returned to church – but do we feel frustrated with the coronavirus restrictions?

We must humble ourselves and listen to the word of God

Jesus is with us by His Spirit

Other things (like music) are unnecessary
Consider Moses – who spent 40 days with God, without singing or music
Consider Isaiah
Consider Peter, James and John at the Transfiguration
Sunday by Sunday we can hear Jesus voice

What made Mary stop and listen to Jesus?

She must have seen something so eminently beautiful in Him
She knew that He loved her
She knew that He could forgive her
She knew that only He had the words of eternal life
Do you long to hear the voice of Jesus?

Mary sat at Jesus’ feet

She came in humility and reverence
John 12:1-10 – She loved Jesus
She came with pure hands before Him
How have we come this morning?
Consider Nadab and Abihu
Consider Cain and Abel
Consider King Saul
We must come humbly before God

Mary listened to Jesus’ word

We are spiritually dead and we need the word of God to bring light into our dark souls
“The word is a light to our feet and a lamp to our path”
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”
Desire the pure milk of the word – grow by feeding on the word of God
Ps 19:10 – have you found this to be so?

Closing Remarks

Accept the word of God and embrace Jesus Christ
Be like Mary and come and sit at the feet of Jesus and hear His word
