Preacher:
Passage: Romans 5:12-21
Service Type:

Introduction

  • Reading 5:12-21 from ESV
    • Contrasting Adam to Christ
    • Reading 5:12-19
  • We are united to Christ
    • This truth is liberating and joy giving
    • We used to be in Adam – but now we are in Christ
    • We look to Christ
  • Our feelings may change with our circumstances and disposition – but being united Christ never changes
    • This brings joy
    • Whatever our circumstances – ‘it is well with our soul’
  • Eph 1:3-4 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him." (ESV)

Romans 5 – A Tale of Two Men

  • Jesus Christ the best of men / Adam the worst of men

Adam

  • Adam
  • ‘Do and live’ – A covenant of works
    • He died and we die
  • Adam was the federal head of humanity
    • His demerits are our demerits
    • People are born in original sin
      • Example of selfishness
      • Rom 5:15, 17, 18, 19
  • Example of President of USA
    • Adam is our federal head
    • If you feel this is unfair, if we were in Adam’s place, we would have done the same
    • How many times have you sinned?
  • Law brings sin
    • Death reigns

Christ

  • Christians have a new federal head
  • The wonder of His person becomes the wonder of our life
    • Explanation
    • 1 Peter 2:22 "He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth"
    • 1 John 3:5 "You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin"
    • Matt 3:17 "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
  • His merits become our merits
  • His perfect life becomes our perfect life
    • We will sleep and awake in glory
    • Christ’s work at the cross is ‘finished/accomplished’
    • Eph 2:4-6 "But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus."
  • Rom 5:15, 16, 18, 19
    • A free gift (of God)
    • Righteousness
    • Look up

Closing Remarks

  • Who is your federal head?
    • Christ or Adam?
    • Repent and trust in Christ’s finished work
    • Closing Prayer
