Causes of Disunity

Selfish Ambition & Conceit

  • In the times of King David - we see the tragic consequences of those that lived for self:
    • David showed great humility and love for God
      • Contrast with Saul
      • Example of David's behaviour
      • Example of Saul's behaviour
      • An unrepentant proud heart / selfish ambition - caused the breakdown in relationship between David and Saul
    • David's family knew disunity
      • Example of Absolom
        • God hates one who sows discord amongst brethren
        • He faced God's judgment
      • Example of Adonijah
  • Paul - speaking to Synthicae
  • Example of our Government
  • James

Means to Unity

    • We know what it is to have great fellowship
  • Yet challenges will come
    • Illustration and examples

  • What to do?
    • Do not meddle
    • Speak to the leadership
    • Do not judge motives
    • Be quick to forgive
    • Seek to have the mind of Christ
    • Consider the facts - illustration
      • Paul - compares himself: the worst of all sinners, the least of all the saints, he esteems others better than himself (v3)
  • Esteem others better than yourself
    • If we only saw ourselves in the light of how God sees us - this would humble us in how we deal with each other
    • Quote from John Stott
      • Do not be concerned with race, place, face or grace
    • Our boast is to be in Christ
  • Look out for the interests of others (v4)
    • Examples
    • Example of F.B. Myer
    • Are we other people centered?
    • Example of Doug Nicholson
  • Jesus first, other next, yourself last

About Andrew Love: Pastor at Tabor Church

Sermon Passage:

Philippians 2:3-4

3Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. (KJV)

Ephesians 3:14-4:6

14For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. 20Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 2With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (KJV)
